Jim Brickman's first solo piano album captures the precious and pensive moments of love's meanderings. Always balancing at the edge of bittersweet, Brickman's lyrical romanticism never plunges to the churning depths of angst, nor does the music skim the cheery top of romance like a frosted icing. "Open Doors" could easily swing in both directions: hope for love's return or sorrow at its departure. The music itself is multifaceted. The pieces can slip easily and beautifully into the background, yet rise to purposeful use for amorous interludes or solitary soul-searching. No flashy keyboard fireworks here, but Brickman brings a solid and consistent romantic presence to every note. Carol Wright, Barnes & Noble
