A tremendously versatile and daring film actor, Antonio Banderas displays his impressive stage chops in the Tony-nominated 2003 revival of Nine. Banderas has sung before (remember the film version of Evita? ), but on this vibrant cast recording he really exhibits a characterful vocal talent that promises future triumphs. As the self-absorbed Italian film director (modeled, of course, on Federico Fellini) the Spanish heartthrob brings his own brand of Latin charm to Maury Yeston’s clever and affecting score. And while Banderas commands both the stage and the album, he’s expertly flanked by a cast of adoring (and not-so-adoring) -- in the context of the musical -- female support players. A major revival, finely played. William Pearl, Barnes & Noble
