About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Small groups have rarely cooked up as pungent a sound as this quintessential version of pianist Oscar Peterson's trio. Joined by the masterful bassist Ray Brown and the effervescent drummer Ed Thigpen, the Canadian keyboard colossus puts wings on blues, standards, swing, and bop classics throughout this career highpoint. If the material is the same-old-same-old ("Things Ain't What They Used to Be," "Bag's Groove," "Moten Swing," "Georgia on My Mind"), the performances are anything but. Sounding a great deal more relaxed than usual, Peterson still tosses off his share of seemingly nonchalant passages that steadily build in intensity, scorching the ground they cover. Brown and Thigpen shadow Peterson's every move, laying down a plush rhythmic carpet or shifting ruthlessly into overdrive. When it comes to mainstream piano combos, this night train hit all the stations. Steve Futterman, Barnes & Noble
