Blending such diverse elements as traditional hymns ("Redeemer"), funk ("Shooby"), acoustic ("Black, White, Tan"), R&B ("Color"), and even spoken word ("Family Tree"), NICOLE C. MULLEN remains a remarkably cohesive journey through the singer's world. The songs, all written or cowritten by Mullen, address such timely topics such as racial harmony, self-esteem, and freedom through faith. Many artists tackling weighty issues end up dividing listeners with their preachiness. Mullen's loving lyrics, however, are always an inspirational and unifying element. Mullen garnered accolades when her "On My Knees," recorded by Jaci Velasquez, became the 1998 Dove Award Song of the Year. Mullen's take on the song closes this collection with a dose of pure perfection. After biding her time singing backup and choreographing for such big names as Michael W.
