Eugene O'Neill's Anna Christie is unusually dark material for a 1950s Broadway musical comedy, and that problem was never really overcome in this show, which turned out to be a star vehicle designed for Gwen Verdon after she became a marquee name with her performance in Damn Yankees. The score was by Bob Merrill, and as this cast album shows, it is unremarkable. Although the show ran for a year and turned a profit on star power, it has never had a major revival and is now nearly forgotten. New Girl In Town was reissued on CD on July 19, 1994.
