The music on this CD is mostly taken from radio shows in the series "The Navy Swings" performed during 1961-1970. Three different versions of drummer Shelly Manne & His Men, a top-notch hard bop quintet, are featured. The performances are mostly very concise (under three minutes), so solos are brief and sometimes only one horn is featured per song. However, the music is a valuable addition to the discography of such players as Manne, trumpeter Conte Candoli, tenor saxophonist Richie Kamuca, altoist Frank Strozier, and pianists Russ Freeman and Mike Wofford, with four numbers from Manne's lesser-known post-bop 1970 group.
