About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Brazilian singer and composer Milton Nascimento may have been a star in his native land, but back in 1975 he would have had a pretty tough time even getting arrested in the U.S. All that changed with his stunning guest appearance on Wayne Shorter's NATIVE DANCER. Singing on only a few tracks, Nascimento made an immediate impact with listeners enchanted by the unearthly beauty of his voice and the lyrical character of songs like "Tarde" and "Anna Maria." Tenor and soprano saxophonist Shorter had flirted with Brazilian music on earlier solo albums; here, he took the full plunge. Turning away from the electronic swirl of Shorter's full-time band, Weather Report, NATIVE DANCER conjures up lush tropical atmospheres by featuring mostly-acoustic instrumentation -- a true treat, for the unadulterated sound of Shorter's saxophones is about as breathtaking as it gets.
