About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

At a time in her life when she could be forgiven for re-recording old hits or touring casinos, Nancy Sinatra has taken a true creative leap. Frank's daughter first earned her stripes with chart-topping singles such as "These Boots Are Made for Walking" and "Somethin' Stupid," a duet with Dad. But Nancy always carried some bad-girl darkness around with her, thanks in part to her work with producer Lee Hazlewood -- were there ripped fishnets under those white go-go-boots? That edge continues to inspire artists today, and on this comeback disc, Sinatra hooks up with some of them, refashioning her music for a younger crowd while losing none of her innate spunk. Some of the tracks could pass for her back catalogue, such as the "Strawberry Wine"–reminiscent "Burnin' Down the Spark," written and produced with a south-of-the-border flair by Calexico's Joey Burns, and the string- and handclap-laced "Don't Let Him Waste Your Time," one of two tracks written by Pulp's Jarvis Cocker. Sinatra's voice blends easily with Morrissey's harmonies on a gorgeous version of his "Let Me Kiss You," and her woozy delivery fits like a glove on the bluesy piano ballad "Two Shots of Happy, One Shot of Sad," a tune originally written for Frank by U2's Bono and the Edge. Other tunes bear the greasy thumbprints of the collaborators even more heavily, such as "Ain't No Easy Way," a song she re-recorded here as a duet with a growling, howling Jon Spencer, and the unsettling "Momma's Boy," written by Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore. But as much as Nancy Sinatra reveals her influence on her followers, it also spotlights Nancy's own bad-girl sense of adventure, which she's maintained throughout her decades-long career.
