About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

This gentle album is a moving tribute to R. Carlos Nakai's musical heritage. On the first ten tracks, Nakai plays arrangements of traditional melodies from the Zuni, Lakota, Dakota, Kiowa, and Central Plains tribes. The songs relate to work ("Corn Grinding Song"), animals ("Eagles Gathering" and "Fox Song"), spirit ("The World How Fair" and "The Great Mystery Hears Me"), and life ("Victory Song" and "Begging Song"). The second half of the disc departs from the traditional melodies, which allows Nakai to improvise more freely; his flutes can emulate the songs of birds, the soaring of eagles, and the skittery nature of the trickster coyote. Here, Nakai makes judicious use of the digital delay synthesizer, just enough to give the impression of a rock canyon's echos. The album ends with James DeMars's composition "Lake that Speaks," a mournfully melodic piece from his TWO WORLD CONCERTO. Carol Wright, Barnes & Noble
