With My Lives, Billy Joel fans only familiar with the piano man's most popular fare get to experience him in an entirely different light. Compiled by the multiple Grammy winner, this five-disc (four CDs and a DVD) anthology is a veritable This Is Your Life. Sprinkled throughout are myriad audio delights, dating from Joel's pre-solo days right up to his recent forays into classical music. Although his earliest group recordings may sound a little dated, it's nonetheless fascinating to hear Joel as a psychedelic popster (with the Lost Souls), a Stax-flavored, blue-eyed-soul man (with the Hassles), and an organ-pumping headbanger (with Attila). It's on the disc's 23 previously unreleased tracks, however, that Joel's musical tastes and creative choices come to the surface. An alternate, reggae-inspired version of "Only the Good Die Young" is surprising effective, while the stripped-down demo of "Miami" is more poignant than its better-known, fleshed-out version. My Lives presents a nearly schizoid range of musical urges: a dalliance with sophisticated jazz on the soundtrack to A League of Their Own (Duke Ellington's "In a Sentimental Mood"); the raucous R&B of the Isley Brothers ("Shout"); a gospel-flavored twist given to Leonard Cohen ("Light as the Breeze"); and straightforward rock 'n' roll (the Beatles' "Hard Day's Night") -- all of them evinced in live recordings or studio alternates. And if nearly five hours of music isn't enough, the enclosed DVD concert from the River of Dreams tour adds a visual touch to Joel's always impressive chops, making My Lives an exhilarating and intriguing trip for both the casual and well-versed Billy Joel fan.
