About Brian Eno

About David Byrne

Editorial Reviews

My Life in the Bush of Ghosts is a masterpiece of pop experimentalism. Using tape loops and raga-like song structures, Brian Eno and David Byrne worked out a brilliant formula: they out-tripped trip-hop long before Tricky, Portishead, and the advent of sampling technology. Check out "The Jezebel Spirit" -- it's a writhing, complex interweaving of found vocals, layered percussion, chiming guitars, doppler-effect synthesizer, and throbbing bass. Each song works in a similarly organic fashion. The artists' synergy is marvelous, as Eno blends the idiosyncratic bounce of his off-kilter pop with Byrne's worship of manic polyrhythms and jangly guitar sounds. An all-star line-up of musicians from the then (1979-80) fertile "downtown" New York scene (including Bill Laswell and David van Tieghem) give inspired and accomplished performances here -- a refreshing reminder of the power of musicianship in an age of machine-driven amateurism. My Life in the Bush of Ghosts captures Eno and Byrne at the height of their powers; the result is a work that is greater than the sum of its considerably talented creators. Classic audio art but you'll have to fight past the Videoby JohnQ

June 29, 2009: Brian Eno and David Byrne created a masterful album of minimal music accompanying odd and obscure pieces of dialog taken from radio, church, and various other sources. Certainly not everyone's cup of tea, but it's one of the best examples of this odd audio art form. If you're looking at David Byrne's name and thinking "Talking Heads", forget it, nothing here resembles The Talking Heads in any way, shape, or form. I generally avoid "enhanced CD's" as the Video on the single disk tends to make it difficult to play the audio section (and this disk is no exception) but the audio, in this case, is worth the trouble.

July 05, 2006: I didn't get hear this 2006 re-issue but I've had the original LP and subsequent CD issue for years, and always found it a great listen. The 'Remain in Light' era funkiness with all the samples from around the world was a novel idea at the time - it opened doors for anyone who wanted to mix and match divergent musical ideas to get unexpected and interesting results. However, there was a track "Qu'ran" that was on the original 1981 LP and the first run of CD's but then disappeared, and isn't on this re-issue. So to get the whole MLITBOG, you'd have to seek out either to get that track.
