Editorial Reviews

It's almost unfathomable that it took nearly five decades into her career for Dionne Warwick to issue a collection of holiday standards, but that would appear to have been the case until My Favorite Time of Year. This long overdue, 13-song collection puts together a selection of traditional and contemporary holiday classics, and Dionne's velvety smooth voice glazes through each track quite seamlessly. The contemporary over polished production and the inclusion of smooth jazz icon Dave Koz might be a detraction to some listeners, but there's a beautiful duet with longtime friend Gladys Knight and "I Believe in Christmas," the album's sole new composition, which features BeBe Winans on guest vocals, that more than make up for that and any other flaws holiday purists may have. Much like her non-holiday fare, this is a charming and warm affair from start to finish a level of quality you'd come to expect from Warwick. While it's definitely been worth the wait, here's hoping a follow-up is shortly in order. Rob Theakston, All Music Guide

November 17, 2004: Dionne's cool breathy vocals, with a great jazz twist is just like a warm blanket on a chilly winter's night. Dionne just knows how to warm and relax you with wonderful performances. Gladys and Bebe are wonderful as well when dueting with Dionne. I purchased this cd a few weeks ago and have yet to take it out of my cd player!!

October 28, 2004: Expecting something less than Whitney's debacle from last year, I was so pleasantly surprised of how nice this new Christmas offering is. Not spectacular, not totally traditional, but very pleasant indeed. Dionne seems to have moved on into the current Smooth Jazz genre. This probably comes from many Smooth Jazz stations (including NY's 101.9) playing her 1998 remake of "Walk On By" constantly on their playlist. Dave Koz appears with his sax on three of the numbers as well. Dionne is better vocally here than I've heard in recent years live, as well as on minimal CD output. Silent Night does not rival Linda Eder's, but it is another version I will learn to cherish along with Linda's, Karen Carpenters's, Streisand's and Petula Clark's. The duets with Bebe Winans and Gladys Knight are nice. Only minor flaw is Happy Holidays. It is the last track, and from experience, this was always the "wake up call", along with Andy Williams's "Most Wonderful Time Of The Year" (also covered here by Dionne, but softer). As the closer, it sounds sleepy the way it was arranged. I can't see wishing "Happy Holidays" and then dozing off. True, this probably will be a Dionne-fan only seller, but those who like smooth jazz, may be worth a shot for a "new" holiday collection for you home this year.
