About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Like many winners of televised talent competitions, Neal E. Boyd fits into no particular marketing schematic of the 2000s. He's a small-town Missouri guy who has always struggled with his weight and always loved opera. He pursued his love, winning the 2000 Music Teachers National Association Vocal Collegiate Competition, which awarded him a solo spot on the stage of Carnegie Hall in 2001, but instead of being the beginning of a musical career it was the end, with Boyd choosing to leave music in favor of selling insurance. Years later, he auditioned for NBC's America's Got Talent, making it onto and eventually winning the 2008 season. My American Dream followed roughly a year later in the summer of 2009, and it's an effective showcase for his supple singing if not quite an artistic statement of purpose. Thankfully, Boyd avoids the ersatz Euro-schlock of Il Divo, never trying to have a pop production, instead being happily symphonic. Boyd pairs familiar opera and classical pieces with familiar pop standards and show tunes. It's a comforting songbook performed in a friendly way, which is Boyd's chief charm and it's on display on this amiable debut. Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

September 21, 2009: This offering by Neal Boyd should be a "must listen" for anyone who appreciates a combination of talent and determination. Critics should also reconsider any decision to dismiss the significance of the story that accompanied Boyd's triumph in the "America's Got Talent" competition. The ability of this young talent will hopefully propel him toward a wonderful career that could at the same time, offer inspiration to others who might feel the odds stacked against the pursuit of their dreams.

Viewers who were mesmerized by Boyd's rendition of "Nessun Dorma" during his quest for the title, might be pleasantly surprised by his effective treatments of well known standards (Somewhere, Amazing Grace, Ave Maria, etc.). Moreover, Boyd's performances of "Anthem" and "God Bless the USA" might "seal the deal!" Fans of the show should also be moved by the tenderness of "Mama," and remember the sincerity of Boyd's devotion to his mother!

Regardless of one's individual tastes, listening to Neal Boyd's debut CD should garner fans from all genres. Even listeners with little tolerance of music beyond their private collections, should if nothing else, acknowledge an appreciation for Neal Boyd's gift. Let's hope the doors of opportunity will remain open for many years to come, in order that he might continue to share his tremendous gift! If so, the rewards will be shared by us all!
