Violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter is one of those classical superstars who has been at the top of her game for so long that she's taken to recording her instrument's masterpieces a second time; the concertos of Beethoven and Tchaikovsky, for instance, have received such treatment from her. Here, in an attractive two-disc foldout set, she offers a reprise go-round of the Mozart concertos, the impetus being the 250th anniversary in 2006 of Mozart's birth (it also happens to be the 30th anniversary of Mutter's debut performance). For collectors, the all-in-one format certainly has the advantage of convenience, for Mutter's previous recordings are on different labels: The Third and Fifth concertos, accompanied by von Karajan, are currently in Deutsche Grammophon's "The Originals" series, while the remaining three, with Muti and Marriner conducting, comprise one of EMI's "Great Artists of the Century" releases. Moreover, the new set offers fresh attractions: Tempos are invariably a shade faster this time around, though not by much; Mutter's lustrous tone, interpretative élan, and technical command are, if anything, even more finely honed; and the brisk, sharp-edged accompaniment of a cut-back London Philharmonic provides the violinist with ideal support. As an added bonus to round out the set, leading violist Yuri Bashmet joins Mutter for the great Sinfonia Concertante, their hot-blooded playing styles perfectly matched in a performance filled with flair and full-bodied timbre.
