It is curious that, considering their revolutionary nature, Mozart’s mature operas are bookended by two opera seria. Written when the composer was 24, Idomeneo demonstrated Mozart’s supreme mastery of orchestral color, accompanied recitatives, and melodic line. It was a notable success for the young composer, but shortly after its Munich premiere in 1781 the opera fell into obscurity, a victim of changing tastes. Mozart eventually revised it and a concert performance (with Idamantes now a tenor as well as many other substantive changes) was given in 1786 at the Auersperg palace in Vienna. But it was not until the mid-20th century that Idomeneo became a regular part of the standard operatic repertoire. The opera’s story is typical of the period and the genre — king is pitted against prince, rival princesses against each other, and just about everyone against the sea god, Neptune. With his series of distinguished and highly acclaimed Mozart operatic recordings, René Jacobs has shown he is the ideal conductor to revive this dazzling composition. The set includes a bonus DVD (45 minutes) that details the making of this remarkable recording. From the Label
