There's no doubt that you get what you see on the cover in Mute's compilation of Mick Harvey's film scores. Even so, Motion Picture Music 1994-2005 seems like a compilation of selections -- something to give you a taste rather than an entire meal -- than an actual album of actual sources, with one exception: the score for Frank Hurley: The Man Who Made History, seems to be included in its entirety and the cues are sequenced chronologically. Harvey, known to most as the Birthday Party's former drummer and musical director of the Bad Seeds, Nick Cave's crack musical unit, has done an impressive array of film work, even outside of these seven films. There are 27 cues here, most of them short, some as brief as 29 seconds, with the longest being just over six minutes, and most clocking in at one to three minutes. They are sequenced aesthetically, it seems, and included either for their pastoral implications or for their terse sense of drama and tension. It makes for a pleasant and engaging listen over the space of 54 minutes, but it would have been nice to get a double-disc dose. And it seems that while there is no denying that what is here is absolutely top-notch in terms of depth and scope as well as invention, there just isn't enough of it.
