All moms -- expectant, new, grand, or great -- will appreciate this lovely collection of songs about motherhood. Two singer/songwriters, Susan McKeown and Cathie Ryan, perform a moving selection of original compositions, Celtic songs, and lullabies, while pianist Robin Spielberg offers graceful instrumentals and a few tunes of her own. Her "Real Pretty Mama" is both touching and sassy, while "Baby's Lullaby" accompanied the delivery of her own baby just prior to this recording. "Rock Me to Sleep, Mother," an 1860 Irish song with new music by Cathie Ryan, is an aching lament for a mother long passed away. Susan McKeown's "Ancient Mother" chant touches three cultures, with lyrics in Native American, Gaelic, and English. "Grandma's Song" and "Mothers' Celebration" will keep Mom's toes tappin' with delight. The songs' lovely arrangements feature such luminaries as Joannie Madden (Irish whistles), Johnny Cunningham (fiddle), and Aine Minogue (harp). Carol Wright, Barnes & Noble
