About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

One of smooth jazz's key acts, Spyro Gyra has influenced countless artists with its buoyant, multistylistic sound, which draws from pop, jazz, R & B, Latin, and Caribbean elements. Spyro Gyra's 1979 sophomore album, MORNING DANCE, represented its first major success and launched the band on a highly successful career that has yet to slow down more than 20 years later. The group's innate joy in performing pervades every note, and the album's blend of styles gives it a kind of kaleidoscopic shimmer. "Jubilee" morphs from a funk rocker into a joyful, flute-accented dance tune, while the catchy "Little Linda" is a breezy, Latin-tinged workout. The spirited workout "Starburst" features a dynamic drum solo, and "Song for Lorraine" features a spiky saxophone attack by group leader Jay Beckenstein. Lucy Tauss, Barnes & Noble
