About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

The latest outing by this L.A.-bred outfit certainly lives up to its title, both in its production style -- markedly more ornate than previous efforts -- and its place of origin (that being Rilo's own label, with Warner distribution, as opposed to the sheltering arms of Saddle Creek). As literate and coquettish as ever, singer Jenny Lewis plays both cat (the bad-girl rocker "Portions for Foxes") and mouse (the more plaintive "Does He Love You") with equal aplomb. The quartet's affection for country instrumentation remains undiminished, as borne out by the sweet banjo interlude that punctuates "Ripchord," but its palette has broadened enough to include the Spector-styled wall of sound -- handclaps and all -- that envelops the wryly self-deprecating "It's a Hit." The softly focused production, like that of a vintage French film, adds to the poignancy of Lewis's bittersweet lyrics and gives her hard shell just enough cushion to let it break at the right time. Adventurous, yes, but also a thing of beauty. David Sprague, Barnes & Noble

January 06, 2005: I wrote it without noticing that "More Adventurous" was left off the track list. It is actually Track #11 ("It Just Is") that is meant for Elliot Smith. The rest of my review is fine. ^_^
