Editorial Reviews

The only difference between this "Rudy Van Gelder Edition" of Joe Henderson's classic 1966 Mode for Joe album, which starred Lee Morgan, Bobby Hutcherson, Curtis Fuller, Cedar Walton, Ron Carter, and Joe Chambers, and the previous version is the sound -- and while there is no doubt that the great Van Gelder reengineered these, the sonic differences are minimal at best. Trackwise, the bonus version of "Black" has been placed at the bottom end of the record instead of as an alternate in the middle. But these differences are so very subtle that they do not warrant another purchase of this album by the faithful. In fact, for the most part, this series is just a very thinly veiled attempt by Blue Note to get fans to shell out money for something they already have. If you are not an audiophile with finely trained ears, do not bother. The high rating this title deserves is for the amazing music contained therein -- check "Caribbean Fire Dance" and the title track, which are worth the purchase price alone. October 02, 2004: This session and "In n' Out" are the two very finest Henderson sessions. "Page One" is also a must have, for all Henderson music collectors. "Inner Urge" and "Our Thing" are certainly good, but of the two, only "Inner Urge" is of the quality you would expect from Joe. Why? Because "Inner Urge" is basically a mini-Cd with 3 really good tracks, and "Our thing" is mostly a "Dorham Thing" with one good track. I guess I have told you everything and Henderson fans will disagree, but that is what this jazz reviewer thinks. The 3 really exceptional CDs from Joe are 3 of the very best CD's you will ever hear. Trust the Jazzman.
