Editorial Reviews

Michael Mann's big-screen adaptation of his groundbreaking (in the '80s) television crime drama Miami Vice was bereft of all of the pastel shirts and white loafers that defined its predecessor. Jan Hammer's synth-heavy theme song and Glenn Frey's ode to the "Smuggler's Blues" were nowhere to be found, replaced by a combination of alternative metal, wintry electronica, neo-soul, and dance-heavy indie rock -- Nonpoint's rendition of Phil Collins' "In the Air Tonight" sounds like the version Chris Daugherty would have done on the 2006 season of American Idol. For the most part, standout cuts from Moby ("Anthem"), Goldfrapp ("Strict Machine"), and Mogwai ("Auto Rock") retain the sweltering, 2 a.m. vibe of the original, but there's nothing memorable or "defining" about anything on this bleak and mostly forgettable slice of reheated late-night pizza. July 05, 2009: The first time I saw this movie I absolutely HATED it. The audio on the DVD was so muffled we couldn't understand what the actors were saying. My partner talked me into watching it again and something tripped. I totally got into the movie and the music was a big part of the attraction. The tracks on the CD are good, but there are some glaring omissions. The version of Anthem by Moby on the soundtrack is not the version in the movie. The cut from the movie is on double disk called "Everything is wrong: Non-stop DJ Mix by Evil Ninja Moby - Mixed Remixed". Had a hell of a time finding it and resorted to getting it from Amazon UK. This soundtrack was also my introduction to the band Mogwai and they are absolutely amazing. Bottom line... if you didn't like the movie give it another shot. If you liked the movie you'll like the soundtrack.
