About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Just about every musician who spends time on a side project insists that it's more than just a time-killer. But A Perfect Circle, which has preoccupied Tool front man Maynard James Keenan in that band's extended vacation, seems passionate -- and sometimes downright obsessive -- enough to stand on its own. As evidenced by its title, Mer De Noms is not without its share of pretense. But once you get used to the notion that you won't be cracking many smiles while immersed in the dark, brooding strains of such songs as "The Hollow" and "Magdalena," it's actually easy to appreciate its stark beauty. Guitarist Billy Howerdel's lush, minor-chord laden melodies set the tone for much of this surprisingly unified debut, calling to mind predecessors as varied as Smashing Pumpkins and '70s space-metallurgists Hawkwind. The '70s vibe is particularly evident on velvet-hammer assaults "Judith" and "Three Libras," which make the most of Paz Lenchantin's mesmerizing bass (she also doubles on violin). October 26, 2007: This is one of the best works of art I've ever heard. It's like stepping into a warm, low-lit study and opening up one of your favorite classics over coffee, or wine. Instead of inspiring emotion, Mer de Noms will dig for your emotion and take hold of it until the disc of finished. I can't explain it any other way. That is what makes it such a true work of art.

September 22, 2007: We don't hear Billy the guitar player sing with his bad voice here, so the music sounds great. This is one of the great CDs from A Perfect Circle before Billy was allowed to sing. Maynard is singing. Most of the songs are also great. "Judith" is the best song, but there are others.
