In 1998, Noreaga dropped one of the great hip-hop singles of the '90s, "Super Thug," a blast of gunfire-like beats and megamacho lyrics that suggested this tough New York MC was operating with different mental and physical equipment than your average rhyme slinger. Like fellow New Yorkers DMX and Jay-Z, Noreaga dropped shout-along gems for mainstream rap fans, and even if he failed to move as many units as those peers, he was certainly a force to be reckoned with. His new MELVIN FLYNT: DA HUSTLER finds its stride when production whizzes Swizzbeats (of Missy Elliott and Ruff Ryders fame) come along for the ingeniously over-the-top locker-room-ready anthem, "Wethuggedout," and while nothing here is quite as inspired as "Super Thug," MELVIN will hardly disappoint Nore's fans. "Gangsta's Watch" sets the tone for a disc of hard-hitting, state-of-the-second East Coast thug-hop that can't quite elevate itself above its now-tired, playa-glamorizing theme. Yet, even when MELVIN FLYNT feels a bit like a rising pro merely takin' care of business, gettin' the job done rarely sounds this urgent. Jon Dolan, Barnes & Noble
