About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

The same elements that drove Rascal Flatts' single "What Hurts the Most" straight up the charts -- close, emotionally heated harmonizing by lead singer Gary LeVox and his compadres Jay Demarcus and Joe Don Rooney, and a triumphant, soaring power ballad arrangement -- fuel the party on the accompanying album, Me and My Gang. The LeVox-Darmarcus-Rooney triumvirate have already chalked up crossover plaudits for their work producing Chicago's new XXX, and this fourth Flatts long-player features them behind the board as well, along with the formidable Dan Huff. So it's another leap forward for the group, shaping and directing their own music, working some interesting variations on their basic formula, but never diminishing their clear commitment to the music and the messages. Not immune to heartbreak but prone to taking a sunnier view, the fellows offer a textbook course in recovering pride and dignity after being dumped in the thumping "Stand" and examine the life-affirming aspects of love and relationships in both the anthem-like love letter "To Make Her Love Me" and the tender, guitar-driven ballad "My Wish." String-rich and keyed by weeping pedal steel, the wrenching "Words I Couldn't Say" features an emotional lead vocal by LeVox that is quickly joined by DeMarcus and Rooney's smooth support in bringing home the story of the one that got away. A clever, toe-tapping honky-tonk workout in the Brooks & Dunn-style "Backwards" and a funky, stuttering country rocker, "Me and My Gang," provide an exhilarating, energizing contrast to the navel gazing treatises. It all adds up to rich listening experience -- a commonplace occurrence when this group convenes. David McGee, Barnes & Noble

September 29, 2006: This CD is amazing. You really can't go wrong with it there is a song for every mood and every person on here. My favourite has to be "Cool Thing". I like "Stand", "What Hurts The Most", "Words I Couldn't Say", and the title track, "Me & My Gang" as well. =) Well worth the time and money to get it!

August 09, 2006: Rascal Flatts are a great brand for two reasons: they make excellent music which sounds melodic, does justice to the instruments, and is powerful and they sing meaningful, moving, intelligent lyrics. This CD has the first criterion in the bag but seriously lacks on the second. The words for the first 7-8 songs are just a little mundane, and the song "Backwards" is just plain stupid. Lyrically the CD only picks up in the last four songs. "Me and My Gang" is a fun song despite the bad grammar, "Ellsworth" is moving beyond description, "Cool Thing" is a fine summer romance, and "He Ain't the Leavin' Kind" polishes off the CD with a poignant song lamenting our nation's wayward ways but offering hope nonetheless. Whereas the CD "Melt" pushed the envelope with its risque title track, this CD (with the exception of its title track--fun, thumping, and festive) adds not much more than a pleasant group of ordinary, melodic songs to your collection.
