Editorial Reviews

Maybe This Christmas mixes some of the new millennium's modern rock faves and indie rock darlings for an album suited for those twenty-somethings searching for your not-so-typical Christmas collection. Artists like Loreena McKennitt, Sense Field, Bright Eyes, and Semisonic's Dan Wilson give these carols a fresh face while adding their own dash of coolness. Dollface indie boys Phantom Planet give "Winter Wonderland" a sweet rock romp, while Coldplay's rendition of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" is as endearing as the original version. The song features a solo Chris Martin on piano for a down-tempo, jazz-like feel. Barenaked Ladies join fellow Canadian chanteuse Sarah McLachlan for a playfully charming take on "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen." Jimmy Eat World's "12/23/95," which is also included on their 1999 album Clarity, is an indie standout. Maybe This Christmas is a solid holiday effort and both casual and die-hard music fans will appreciate its design. A portion of the proceeds made from Maybe This Christmas went to Toys for Tots, a charity supported by the U.S. Marine Corps. MacKenzie Wilson, All Music Guide
