Editorial Reviews

This collection is billed as "a collection of the most popular works for cello performed by the greatest cellists of our time" and while one could quibble about the inclusion of, say, the Intermezzo from Granados' "Goyescas" and the exclusion of, say, any Brahms, or about the inclusion of Christina Walewska and the exclusion of Anner Bylsma, one could not dispute that this is a collection of most of the popular works by many of the greatest cellists of our time. Because with Pablo Casals' brilliant Allegro con brio from Beethoven's "Cello Sonata No. 5," with Janos Starker's soulful Sarabande from Bach's "Cello Suite No. 3," with Pierre Fournier's sparkling Gigue from Bach's "Cello Suite No. 6," with Mischa Maisky's songful "Ave Maria" of Schubert, with Lynn Harrell's exquisite "Élégie" of Fauré, with Maurice Gendron's lovely "The Swan" from "The Carnival of the Animals," and with 22 other glorious examples of cello playing at its best, it would be vain to dispute the billing's extraordinary claims. While certainly not for the dedicated listener, this set is a wonderful introduction to the art of playing the cello. James Leonard, All Music Guide
