Mark Twain's Boyhood Home and Museum in Hannibal has released a celebration of Twain's life and work that, if a bit muted and careful, is a pleasing journey through the world of Twain, author of the greatest novel in the American literary canon, Huckleberry Finn, a novel whose themes of class, race, and freedom continue to be central concerns of 21st century America. Narrated by Garrison Keillor, with Clint Eastwood providing the voice of Twain and Jimmy Buffett giving voice to Huck Finn, and music contributions from country and bluegrass musicians Emmylou Harris, Doyle Lawson, Rhonda Vincent, Brad Paisley, Vince Gill, Ricky Skaggs, and lone pop participant Sheryl Crow, it all adds up to a scrubbed-up and shiny version of Twain's life and thoughts, many of which still sound wise and astute in a contemporary America that Twain undoubtedly would have recognized from his own. January 10, 2012: This 2-CD biography of Mark Twain is unlike anything you've ever heard. Part story, part song, the album chronicles Twain's life with Clint Eastwood as Twain, Jimmy Buffett playing Huckleberry Finn, and the voice of Prairie Home Companion - Garrison Keillor - narrating. There is a small passage of Twain's daughter played by Angela Lovell. Excerpts by Twain tell his life story with perfectly selected songs to correspond with each. Emmylou Harris opens with a song about Halley's comet, which was visible when Twain was born and later when he died. Ricky Skaggs sings the closing song, "Comet Ride," which sums up Twain's life. Every word and every song is simply perfect. The music is flawless and includes Sheryl Crow and Brad Paisley among others. I loved listening to the story and each song really added to the overall narrative. This is a brilliant way to illustrate a writer's life - using his actual words and then playing a song that goes with that particular aspect. I have to confess that I cried twice. Twain's life did have some heartaches. But I also laughed and enjoyed the lighter moments. I received this as a gift and can't wait to share it with others. Also, it comes with a beautiful book attached that includes stories, lyrics and amazing pictures. This should win a stack of Grammy awards. It is my favorite CD!
