About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Sometimes, biology is destiny. Although the daughter of two Brazilian legends, vocalist Elis Regina and her collaborator Cesar Camargo Mariano, Maria Rita struggled valiantly for a career outside of the spotlight. But, she was eventually cajoled into recording, and to no one's surprise, she's inherited a goodly portion of the silken tones that made her mother a star like none other. But Maria Rita is no bossa nova retread -- not quite. The excitement and risk of early bossa is here, but sounding nothing like "The Girl from Ipanema." "A Festa," the Latin Grammy-nominated opening track, is a revisioning of "La Bamba" by her godfather, Milton Nascimento. It sambas joyously between Northern Brazilian and Caribbean rhythms, lit up by Maria Rita's ingratiating, guileless voice. Other tracks verge on soul jazz ("Meninha do Portão"), boleros ("Dos Gardenias"), and manguebeat (Lenine's "Lavadeiras do Rio"). In defiance of expectations that she somehow save Brazilian music from the excesses of 21st century pop, Maria Rita delivers a refreshingly honest, joyful record. Those who have been waiting for another singer to capture the charms of Brazilian song the way Elis did will be thrilled with this new talent. Mark Schwartz, Barnes & Noble
