New Zealand-born Kiri Te Kanawa goes back to her roots in this recital of Maori melodies. These folks tunes were edited and notated in the early 20th century and range from the lullaby-like "Hine e hine" to the lively drum rhythms of "Tarahike." "Matangi," a graceful hula tune, recalls Canteloube's "Songs of the Auvergne" which Dame Kiri recorded so memorably. Throughout this program, the soprano's tone is sincere and ladylike, reminiscent of Bidù Sayao's stellar performance of Villa-Lobos's folk-flavored BACHIANAS BRASILEIRAS. Most delightful of all is "Tahi nei taru kino" ("Action Song"), guaranteed to inspire any music-loving couch potato to leap into a rain dance. Te Kanawa included a few splendidly vigorous Maori melodies on a recent CD commemorating her 50th birthday, but this is even more lively and full of folkloric fun. Benjamin Ivry, Barnes & Noble

March 06, 2001: At the end of our trip to NZ, we decided we had to get a couple cds. We bought Maori Songs after it was suggested by a friend. We were skeptical whether an opera singer (even if she is of Maori ancestry)could pull this off. Well, she has done a beautiful job of blending her wonderful operatic voice with traditional Maori songs. It is a wonderful reminder of our introduction to the Maori culture and trip to NZ.

March 01, 2000: The music is beautiful in itself. With Dame Kiri Te Kanawa's voice added to it, the songs soar into another dimension. All in all, the musical arrangement of the voices accompanied by simple musical instruments, really tear at one's heartstrings.
