About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Jessica Molaskey couldn’t make a mediocre recording even if she tried. On the third release under her own name, this captivating vocalist continues to prove that given a quality song of any vintage, she can make it gleam even brighter. And Molaskey knows a quality song: She inhabits the creations of such legendary composers as Harold Arlen, Stephen Sondheim, and Meredith Willson, the jazzman Jon Hendricks, and the contemporary theatrical wizard Ricky Ian Gordon (with whom Molaskey co-wrote the touching “Cradle and All”) with the sure instincts of a singer implicitly drawn to the right sources. Her collaborators -- as always -- are top-notch, with special kudos going to arrangers Don Sebesky and John Clayton, who skillfully buff up the proceedings while keeping Molaskey’s mellifluous tones the paramount focus. In addition to his assured guitar work -- hear how naturally he and the singer intertwine on Schwartz and Field’s lovely “Growing Pains” -- John Pizzarelli (Molaskey’s husband) duets with his beloved on a rollickingly comic mesh of Hendricks’s “Cloudburst” and Sondheim’s “Getting Married Today.” In its enchanting union of singer and song, Make Believe is no doubt the real thing.
