Editorial Reviews

Leonard Bernstein is often considered Gustav Mahler's greatest posthumous adherent, having almost single-handedly resurrected the Viennese master's symphonic music from neglect. Although others undoubtedly share credit for this achievement, one thing is certain: Bernstein's profound musical and philosophical understanding of Mahler's oeuvre created some of the most passionate, electrifying performances of the composer's works on record. Here, in Sony Classical's 12-disc set containing Bernstein's interpretations of Mahler's complete symphonies along with several orchestral song cycles, all of the maestro's signature flourishes are present. Dramatic tempo juxtapositions and unexpected lyrical moments are framed by Bernstein's characteristically energetic drive, a quality evident even well into his later years. The majority of these recordings are by the New York Philharmonic -- an ensemble Mahler himself led from 1909 to 1911 -- but the Israel Philharmonic and the London Symphony Orchestra provide ensemble variety, performing the song cycle Kindertotenlieder and the Eighth Symphony, respectively. One particularly noteworthy inclusion is the "Adagietto" from the Fifth Symphony in C Minor, recorded live in St. Patrick's Cathedral, New York, at the funeral Mass for Robert Kennedy. It is one of Mahler's most elegiac compositions, and Bernstein brings the movement's tender strings and poignantly optimistic melodies to life in a performance that reminds us why he is still considered one of America's greatest native-born conductors. A final note: the digital remastering here is excellent. Even though some of these recordings are more than 30 years old, the sound quality is crisp and clear throughout.
