CD
Characteristically quirky but quintessentially musical, this disc of lieder of Alban Berg, Claus Ogermann, and Gustav Mahler is a wonderful addition to mezzo-soprano Brigitte Fassbaender's relatively slender discography of solo recordings. Fassbaender was always an original interpreter and an individualistic artist and her choice of repertoire here fits her like a hand-tailored suit. Berg's Op. 2 lieder are voluptuous and intoxicating. Ogermann's "Tagore Lieder" are languorous and beguiling. Mahler's "Lieder aus Dem Knaben Wunderhorn" are sad, sassy, and saucy. And Fassbaender's voice inhabits them all, breathing through Berg's long lines, phrasing through Ogermann's sensual melodies, and laughing through Mahler's pseudo-peasant drolleries. Pianist John Wustman keeps up with all Fassbaender's moods, her daring ritardanos, and her bold tempo changes, and supports her with power, precision, and a fair amount of passion. For listeners who already love Fassbaender, this disc will be a treat. For listeners who don't know Fassbaender, this disc will be a discovery. Arts Archives' 1986 sound is full, round, and present.
