About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

This singer-songwriter has gone through a number of phases in her musical evolution, casting herself as upright folkie, brassy rock belter, and sonic activist. With Lucky, Melissa Etheridge seems to be letting her guard down enough to simply have a good time in the studio, a feeling that leaps from the disc's grooves. She pumps up the volume on some tracks, notably the Bob Seger–styled "Secret Agent," but Lucky's intensity comes from a deeper place than that. On "If You Want To," for instance, Etheridge revisits the sexy vibe she tapped into for "Come to My Window," but this time the flirtatiousness is more upbeat, less steeped in longing. Likewise, "When You Find the One" is that rarest of pop beasts -- a song of requited love that doesn't veer into sappiness. Etheridge can't stay away from issues altogether, but the topical tunes here are less didactic than her past work. The yearning "Tuesday Morning" pays homage to the victims of 9/11, particularly Mark Bingham, the gay Flight 93 passenger who's credited with bringing the plane down before it could reach Washington, D.C. -- and accentuates the somber mood with a sample from the civil-rights marching song "Up and Down This Road." Even that song bears a sort of serenity, a tone of pride, and a sense that -- as the rest of the album espouses -- brighter things are not far away. David Sprague, Barnes & Noble

October 21, 2004: Melissa brings the heat to New York City! Her live performance on her new ‘Lucky’ DVD is such an awesome addition to my collection. All the songs in this concert are of her most recent hits, except ‘Breathe’ – which has always been my favorite anyway. You guys should definitely check out the interview in the bonus features – it’s a really intimate look at her as a person and a woman, rather than just her music. ‘Come on Out Tonight’ is one of the songs toward the end of the concert that really gets me moving. And the clarity of the audio and the video is amazing in dvd quality. Just watching it brings me back to when I went to see her live – it’s a vivid reminder of the energy Melissa has on stage. I haven’t gotten a chance to listen to the CD that comes along with it but I think it’s the audio version of the concert. I’ll probably check it out this weekend.

March 15, 2004: Melissa rocks again with music from the heart. Lucky is her best since Yes I Am. My favorite songs are Breathe, Tuesday Morning, Lucky, If You Want To, Mercy, but all are good. This CD certainly deserves to be added to any rock fan's collection. Two thumbs up!
