Recorded on the supporting tour for 1976's Black and Blue, the double-album set Love You Live is an adequate live album, capturing the Stones' transition from a lean, lethal rock & roll band to accomplished showmen. As showmen, they aren't as compelling as they are when they're rockers, but the show-biz glitz of Mick Jagger's arena rock shtick remains thoroughly entertaining, even when it robs the music of its power. January 18, 2003: Culled from 1976's "Black and Blue" tour, "Love You Live" is one of the best Rolling Stones albums. A double live recording with double fun. Disc 1 opens up with the in-your-face guitars of "Honky Tonk Women", and continues through amazing performances of "If You Can't Rock Me", "Get Off Of My Cloud", "Happy", "Star Star", and "Tumbling Dice". "Fingerprint File" grooves thanks to funky organ licks from the magnificent Billy Preston. "You Can't Always Get What You Want" is done well, and includes a midsong jam between Mick Jagger and the audience. Disc 2 kicks off in high gear with covers of songs by Chuck Berry ("Around and Around"), Bo Didley ("Crackin' Up"), and Howlin Wolf ("Little Red Rooster"). "It's Only Rock And Roll" rocks thanks to some groovy guitar playing. The boys also deliver a blazing performance of "Brown Sugar". "Jumpin' Jack Flash" is excellent, with great guitar solos. "Sympathy For The Devil" closes the album, and the version here is similar to the version on "Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out". However, it sounds great. The album take a while to get used tp, but if you really listen to it, you just might love "Love You Live".
