Although she hasn't achieved massive mainstream success, on this 15-song compilation Patti LaBelle proves that she deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as divas Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, and Mariah Carey. The powerfully piped LaBelle started her illustrious career in the '60s with the girl group the Blue Belles and in the '70s with the funk trio LaBelle. The mix of solo material and LaBelle songs on Love Songs finds the Philly native experimenting with red-hot Latin music ("Teach Me Tonight [Me Gusta Tu Baile]" with Sheila E. and Willie Colon), Chic-worthy funk ("Joy to Have Your Love"), and roof-raising gospel ("Quiet Time," featuring the Johnny Land Singers). Whether Patti is flexing her three-and-a-half octave range on the slinky soul of "Come into My Life," backing Laura Nyro on the gorgeous doo-wop of "The Bells," or strutting her stuff on the sassy "Lady Marmalade," the diva-licious Love Songs showcases the talent of a star who deserves her due.
