Alice Peacock covers a wide range of styles that fit within the singer/songwriter umbrella at its widest on her second album. While she most often heads down a straightforward roots rock road, there are not infrequent touches of country, as well as a bit of Americana, Tex-Mex, and the kind of piano-backed balladry associated with confessional female singer/songwriters. The earthier songs in particular are well-suited for her husky voice, which delivers material hinting at a restless on-the-road lifestyle without getting too wild and crazy. A few songs look back to school days with unsentimental detail, and there are occasional religious overtones in searches for answers and meaning in the divine. Yet though the subject matter is often weighty and serious, the tone is more often than not resolutely upbeat, certainly never more so than on the title track that concludes the disc. "I Am Mary" has a considerably more serious and downbeat tone than most of the material, and shows a knack for first-person narrative that cuts deeper than much of its surroundings.
