Love Affair's collection is primarily noteworthy for romantic music composed, orchestrated, and conducted by Italian soundtrack legend Ennio Morricone. In addition to the score, the first four songs are classic mood-setting period pieces from Bobby Short, Ray Charles, and two gems from Louis Jordan (the bubbly "Life Is So Peculiar" also boasts Louis Armstrong). Several soothing instrumentals intertwine around the charming main theme, "For Annette & Warren," and are reprised through soft-string variations: "A Promise in the Air," "Sentimental Walk," and "Journey of Love." Placing the opening songs before the score makes for a somewhat disconnected flow, and although pertinent to the film, Ray Charles' beautiful rendition of the holiday favorite "The Christmas Song" may relegate the album to mainly December enjoyment. Because of Morricone's incredibly expansive catalog of work, listeners interested in these delicate themes may consider exploring his With Love: Music Composed & Conducted by Ennio Morricone compilation series. ~ Craig Curtice, All Music Guide All Music Guide
