About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Used and abused by major labels during his long career, production paragon Pete Rock began receiving the respect he deserved once he formed a relationship with Rapster/BBE, a British label and one of the few imprints to treat hip-hop as an artistic medium, not a cash cow. Lost and Found is the supreme gesture of respect from Rapster, a two-disc package that comprises two separate albums recorded by Rock after the dissolution of his partnership with rapper C.L. Smooth. (Tellingly, both of these were rejected by his label soon after the sessions finished.) The first, Center of Attention, features a group called InI that Rock formed with his brother Grap Luva, Rob-O, and Marco Polo. The second, The Original Baby Pa, featured a rapper named Deda that Rock hoped to groom and so achieve the artistic and commercial success of his early-'90s records with Smooth. Rock's style of production, a jazzy blend of aqueous keys and reedy samples, is one of the most textured and mellowed-out -- and admired -- of any straight-ahead hip-hop producer. Unfortunately, these two records also illustrate Rock's looming weaknesses. The first is his abnormally bland beats, which simply cruise below the rhymes and effects, sounding as though they were programmed in a hot minute. (Any type of change, however slight, becomes a sudden relief; "How I'm Livin" on the Deda record is a gorgeous downtempo jam.) The second is his seeming inability to record with rappers equal to his talent; C.L. Smooth was very close but not quite there, and the lyricists found here do little more than spin their wheels over Rock's gorgeous productions. The scattered highlights, though, are capable of making hip-hop fans forget the soundalike drum programs; "Step Up" has that Pete Rock sound he made famous on "Straighten It Out," and "To Each His Own" has a lost rhyme from Q-Tip as well as the talents of Large Professor. December 17, 2003: As a die hard fan of hip-hop, I find often find myself frustrated by the "cheesy" production that dominates hip-hop (mainstream hip-hop that is). To have this masterpiece is having hip-hop at its pinnacle before the "bling" era corrupted the culture. MC's Rob-O, Grap Luva, Marco Polo, and Deda drop rhymes that beautifully compliments the Soul Brother's smooth and laid back production. This is the type of joint that I'd throw on and mellow out to following a long day at the office. Standouts on the InI record include Faxin Jax, To Each His Own feat. Q-Tip & Large Professor, and Think Twice. If your a fan of this, cop the magnificent Soul Survivor, and Petestrumentals. Standouts on the Deda joint include Everyman, Marked for Death, and Press Rewind. Look out for Soul Survivor II and the Pete Rock and C.L. Smooth reunion album.

October 05, 2003: pete rock is the illest producer ever. check the baby pa album and youll see the grit, grime and soul of hiphop and all the other forms of black music that make pete the illest. baby pa was supposed to drop in 95 with his album which shows you how ill pete is. to put out an album 8 nine years later is crazy. and the beats are hotter than anything out today. ini came out on the bootleg tip but this is the original w/ the interludes. the interlude beats are better than anything the neptunes, timberland, dre, or whoever producer that is out now put out. songs like too close, marked4death and blah uno are tracks that producers today will never be able to make. pete is way ahead of his time. these two cds are the only cds you need for the rest of your life
