What can you say: here are ten Top Ten hits by the iconic Johnny Rodriguez, one of country music's greats in the late '70s and '80s. Back when the music had acoustic fiddles and pianos, Rodriguez combined a subtle Tex-Mex backbeat with traditional honky tonk, and was a song stylist revered by aspiring up-and-comers. That he's been largely forgotten is simply a tragedy as the 21st century country music industry operates more like New York's "disco" industry in the mid-'70s -- if your second single doesn't follow your first into the charts, you're gone and forgotten. These ten songs represent only a small fraction of the fantastic tunes Rodriguez laid down on tape, but it's a brilliant if small introduction to a man with a unique voice who was as original as they come as an interpreter (and still would be if he weren't resigned to singing on country nostalgia tours), from the moving "Ridin' My Thumb to Mexico" to his awesome reading of "That's The Way Love Goes" and the stolid, stoic-through-tears version of "Pass Me By (If You're Only Passing Through)."
