Editorial Reviews

Recorded in various venues at various times (including "a short stretch of beach on Nassau in the Bahamas"), Kenny Chesney's first live album is a red-hot celebration of good vibes, good times, good women, and, well, the good life in general. Backed by his blazing road band, Chesney kicks it off with "Live Those Songs Again," which, with its stuttering, fuzzed-out lead guitar licks, has a strong Aerosmith bent until it unfolds as a hard, fiddle-spiked country anthem made buoyant by Chesney's expressive, slightly husky tenor. The arc of Chesney's live shows is heavily weighted to the spitfire rock side, guitar-driven and redolent with thundering drums, and he's an engaging host and amiable vocal presence. Lightweight, party-hearty fare such as "Beer in Mexico" and the rowdy "Keg in the Closet" is greeted with the expected roars, as the band powers it way through crunch-and-grind, guitar-driven tunes. More sensitive feelings emerge in the reflective, good-old-days ballad "I Go Back" and in a muted, evocative take on "Back Where I Come From," both of which inspire in Chesney some nuanced vocal shadings that bring home the lyrics' poignancy. A lotta roar, a bit of introspection, hot guitars, and engaging warbling throughout -- buddy, that's some show. It's no accident that Chesney's one of the hottest tickets going.
