About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Loreena McKennitt owes some part of her phenomenal success to her ability to craft songs at once intimate and sprawling, drawing upon many histories and cultures while always touching on raw human feeling. Conceived as a fund-raising project for the Cook-Rees Memorial Fund for Water Search and Safety, this two-CD set was recorded on her 1998 Book of Secrets tour and mixed at Peter Gabriel's Real World studios. McKennitt's first full-length live recording, it demonstrates that her talent is not just a product of studio mixes. A live concert may not have the refinement of a studio session, but McKennitt's fans won't be disappointed: The large ensemble of violin, cello, bass, piano, guitars, drums, and percussion invigorates her fusion of folk, medieval, Celtic, and Middle-Eastern themes with a spicy cross-cultural ambience. And when she sings, her voice rises like a phoenix. Featuring the three-million-selling Book of Secrets in its entirety, Live in Paris and Toronto includes nine more McKennitt favorites, including "The Lady of Shalott" and "Between the Shadows," each testifying to the brilliance and grace of this unique international star.
