About Eric Clapton's Rainbow Concert Band

About Steve Winwood

Editorial Reviews

Eric Clapton's new millennium has largely been defined by collaborations with friends, beginning with a duet album with B.B. King following through with a Cream reunion and closing with tours with his former Blind Faith running mate, Steve Winwood. Clapton and Winwood did three concerts together at Madison Square Garden in February 2008 and the results were fruitful enough to spawn this double-disc album -- along with its accompanying DVD set -- and a moderately scaled 2009 tour. Live from Madison Square Garden culls 21 highlights from those three nights and spreads them over two discs, sequencing the songs so Traffic numbers alternate with selections from Blind Faith, Derek & the Dominos, blues standards, a handful of Clapton's hits, and a heavy dose of Hendrix, who has no less than three songs here. That extended salute to Jimi is a good indication of the vibe here -- this is a genuine shared co-billing with Clapton and Winwood trading vocals and solos almost equally. There's not much ego here and not much hunger, either, with the two stars sliding into a relaxed groove that yields plenty of rewards. There's a comfortable touch to their playing that's greatly appealing, and the straightforward setting places the spotlight directly on their interplay. Clapton and Winwood might roll easy but they can still create some sparks, sometimes in unexpected places, such as the somewhat forgotten '80s hits "Forever Man" and "Split Decision," both which are highlights here. Ultimately, this isn't an album of moments, but rather a sustained whole that finds Clapton and Winwood egging each other on to produce a wholly satisfying, if not quite surprising, reunion. August 15, 2009: The groans that may understandably leak from the glazed lips of the adults out there should be silenced. No, this is hardly the painful experience you might imagine. I suppose we should be pleased that these two towering rock giants are alive to even pull off this project. All the expected tunes are here, in starightforward arrangements, with the original voices covering their respective tunes. Winwood still possesses incredible pipes and Clapton more than manages to stay awake. The Hendrix tribute is fitting and moving. For any so called Dinosaurs in the readership, this is right up your alley.

August 03, 2009: A fine double disc live album, with one of the most unlikely reunions around. After not performing together in almost 40 years, since the fall out of the group Blind Faith, Clapton appeared on one of Winwood's studio albums. Then they did several performances at Madison Square Garden (from which this recording was taken) and they then embarked on a tour.

This live album is quite good with a number of unexpected but wonderful song choices. The songs pull largely from Blind Faith's single album (though "Sea of Joy" is strangely absent), the band Traffic, and lots of electric blues. The pair stays away from the majority of their big hits. For example Winwood's work with the Spencer Davis Group is absent as is his biggest solo hit "Higher Love." Same goes for Clapton, as there are no Cream songs and his big hits like "Wonderful Tonight" and "Layla" are missing. These aren't complaints but if you are the type of listener who only wants BIG hits this is probably not for you.

As with most Clapton live albums there is no on stage banter or conversations with the audience, this show is simply wall to wall music. And the liner notes are way too sparse with a few pictures and composition credits but nothing more (possibly a marketing ploy to make you buy the companion DVD documentary).

As for the performances they are quite good, Winwood is in spectacular voice, his organ and guitar work (though often covered by Clapton's guitar) is also great, reminding us why he was once one of the most promising musicians around. This is also Winwood's only Live album so it holds a special value. Clapton also pulls out some great riffs and even though there are many (possibly too many) Clapton live albums this is one of the better ones with a large number of songs that are not available on his other live recordings.

Overall this will surely please fans of Blind Faith and Traffic as well as the pairs die hard fans. Not a great album but certainly a very very good one.
