Editorial Reviews

Since Richard Thompson has a reputation as the ultimate "musician's musician," it's fitting that he'd be at his best in the ultimate musician's town -- and this recording, culled from the folk-rock stalwart's recent appearance on Austin City Limits, bears that out. It's an intriguing collection, since it offers up stellar versions of some Thompson concert staples -- including a harrowing version of what's arguably his best-known composition, "Shoot Out the Lights" -- but spends just as much time on relative obscurities. Some of the disc's best moments bubble up during these lesser-known gems, from the evilly twisted kiddie-tale wordplay of "Uninhabited Man" to the melodic eloquence of "Bathsheba Smiles." Thompson's always-witty between-song banter gets short shrift here, which is too bad, since it usually provides important leavening in his heavy-on-the-heaviness lyrical recipes. But with full focus on the songs, it's possible to pay full attention to both his guitar work -- the disc is split between acoustic and electric segments, the latter highlighted by the icy "She Twists the Knife Again" -- and his timeless storytelling. David Sprague, Barnes & Noble

August 01, 2005: How in the world did this ever get put out ? The sound is just too painful to listen to on any kind of a decent stereo system. The screetchy highs just drive you away. It's a great shame because Richard Thompson is a guitarist that other better know "stars" could only hope to be in their dreams. The song selection is good (not at all obscure per David Sprague's comment) and Danny Thompson is always rock solid on the stand up version. The chat between songs was probably edited out. The digital recording process has destroyed what was no doubt a fine performance. In analogue this could have been just beautiful and the tape hiss would have been well worth it.

June 05, 2005: Richard Thompson’s second commercial live album is a big improvement over Small Town Romance, recorded over 20 years ago. He has developed his singing and his acoustic guitar playing and the sound is much better. Danny Thompson and Michael Jerome provide expert support. The electric numbers only make up about a third of the CD. RT plays solo on the finale, a fine version of the great Vincent Black Lightning 1952.
