About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Bill "Bunky" Sheppard's Constellation label released this live set by the Duke of Earl in 1965. Driven by the massive R&B hit "Rainbow 65," the set has its moments. Live at the Regal features three of Gene Chandler's greatest ballads: "What Now," "Just Be True," and "God Bless Our Love." Curtis Mayfield penned four of the nine selections, including Major Lance's "Monkey Time," a song Chandler wanted to record but producer Carl Davis had already promised to Lance. He really cuts loose on "Soul Hootenanny" and Billy Butler's "A Song Called Soul." Chandler, always knocked for his inability to stay on key, doesn't disprove that argument here. Still, you can't deny the Duke's energy and charisma. Collectables did us a favor in 1994 by reissuing Gene Chandler's only live recording in CD format. Andrew Hamilton, All Music Guide
