About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

This package, recorded in 2004 at the fabled San Francisco club, commemorates the 30th anniversary of this venerable roots-rock juggernaut with a career-spanning performance that's reminiscent of The Last Waltz -- without the bittersweet undertone of an impending farewell, that is. Even three decades on, Los Lobos haven't lost touch with their bar-band roots; they've still got the sense of pace and surprise that's invaluable on those long four-set nights. That's evident here, as they move effortlessly from the moody, reverb-laden tones of "I Walk Alone" to the good 'n' greasy rock of "Shakin' Shakin' Shakes." The band pepper the performance with songs that nod to the artier side of their catalog -- notably the spacious "Good Morning Aztlan" -- and a hefty dose of the south-of-the-border vibe that sets them off from the roots-rock competition. They're just as fluid working in Spanish as in English, tugging the heartstrings with "Luz de Mi Vida" and stoking the sensual fires with "Mas y Mas," which features a guest spot from steel guitar whiz Robert Randolph. Even though it's been raging for three decades, Los Lobos' party shows no sign of slowing down. David Sprague, Barnes & Noble
