Recorded on August 16, 2000, at San Francisco's legendary Fillmore Theater, this hyperactive 17-song set presents Cypress Hill -- the rap group known for the nasal, smoked-out musings of B-Real, Sen Dog's commanding baritone, and DJ Muggs's trademark squeaky beats -- at their finest. In this live setting, the classics "How I Could Just Kill a Man" and "Insane in the Brain" meld together effortlessly, with the excited audience chanting along with B-Real's pro-pot smoking declarations, such as "Just like Louis Armstrong lit the trumpet/I'll hit my bong and break 'em off somethin'." On the second half of the set, the group dive headfirst into rap metal, with Cypress Hill extended family member SX-10 providing the hard-core beats. The live electric guitars and percussion and string sections breathe new life into the taunting "I Ain't Going Out Like That," while the thrashing pace and provocative call to "start it up" on "Riot Starter" send the crowd into a frenzy. After a mandatory and temper-taming blunt-smoke break, Cypress Hill end the show with the rap and rock symphony "(Rock) Superstar" from Skull & Bones, proving that they have enough potent hits to leave even the most sober crowd with a contact high. While Cypress Hill's Skull & Bones album showcased their sudden interest in merging hard rock with rap, Live at the Fillmore stands as a better testament to the group's newfound ability to synthesize the two styles into an invigorating formula. The album gets off to a fiery start with some rowdy renditions of the group's early-'90s material -- "Hand on the Pump," "How I Could Just Kill a Man," "Insane in the Brain" -- before the sound of heavy metal guitars appears mid-set. Besides integrating guitar riffs into Muggs' already adrenalized beats, the group reinterprets older songs such as "A to the K," making them sound new. Of course, Cypress Hill wouldn't be Cypress Hill without their adamant smoking advocacy, and starting with the trippy siren intro to "I Wanna Get High," the group moves through a medley of bud-smoking songs before the mosh-inciting conclusion of "Riot Starter" and "(Rock) Superstar."
