Bassist Richard Davis built his reputation playing on essential sessions by numerous jazz legends including Sarah Vaughan, Eric Dolphy, Ahmad Jamal, and Elvin Jones. He also has a full discography under his own leadership. On this 1994 release, captured live three years earlier at Sweet Basil in New York, Davis assembled a first-rate band for a superior night of post-bop. The standout track is the Davis-penned "Dealin," featuring heated interplay between trumpeter Cecil Bridgewater and tenor saxophonist Ricky Ford. This is an excellent straight-ahead date that finds these musicians not content to rest on previous credentials, but turning what could have been "just another live date at Sweet Basil" into a memorable experience.
