About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Bassist Richard Davis built his reputation playing on essential sessions by numerous jazz legends including Sarah Vaughan, Eric Dolphy, Ahmad Jamal, and Elvin Jones. He also has a full discography under his own leadership. On this 1994 release, captured live three years earlier at Sweet Basil in New York, Davis assembled a first-rate band for a superior night of post-bop. The standout track is the Davis-penned "Dealin," featuring heated interplay between trumpeter Cecil Bridgewater and tenor saxophonist Ricky Ford. This is an excellent straight-ahead date that finds these musicians not content to rest on previous credentials, but turning what could have been "just another live date at Sweet Basil" into a memorable experience. January 02, 2004: This side burns. Ricky Ford is in top form here, and so is everybody else. Righteous, no B.S. jazz. Get it!
