Editorial Reviews

There's an amazing moment midway through the first disc of this Mötley Crüe live greatest-hits package. It's 1982, the boys are playing their roadhouse rocker "Piece of Your Action," and right in the middle of the song -- as Mick Mars blazes away on guitar and Tommy Lee drops atom bombs on his drums -- you hear a strange ripping sound. It might be a zipper unzipping, a chain saw revving up, or, possibly, an overlong fart. It's rather hard to tell. But what better metaphor could there possibly be for the sound of '80s metalmeisters Mötley Crüe and their mix of porno antics, slasher-flick iconography, and locker-room laughs. On LIVE, the Crüe rip through their greatest hits in front of crowds so passionate you can almost see them throwing their hands in the air and waving 'em like they just don't care. Covering almost two decades, from '82 to '99, the collection goes from early shout-alongs like "Live Wire" and "Ten Seconds to Love" to romps through "Helter Skelter" and "Smokin' in the Boys Room" to recent versions of smashes like "Girls, Girls, Girls," "Dr. Feelgood," "Kickstart My Heart," and "Home Sweet Home." Still, the strongest stuff is on Disc Two, most of which was recorded in 1997 and 1998. Although their hits have stopped coming and the booze and drugs have reportedly been ditched, the Crüe rock loud and proud, driving through their tunes with a string-snapping, lung-shredding fervor and an exuberance worthy of a band half their age. October 09, 2005: I love this live album. Besides for all of the swear words, the songs are awesome.
