Editorial Reviews

When it comes to sheer fun, the revival of the beloved Little Shop of Horrors is the hands-down winner for the 2003 Broadway season. Now known to two generations -- early fans who fondly remember the original theatrical run in the late 1970s, and the younger crowd who grew up adoring the 1986 film adaptation -- this pop musical is now a perennial favorite. The cast album of the latest Broadway production is another winner, filled with spirited performances that bring enough novel appeal to enliven the show, while retaining all of the pizzazz of the earlier versions. In addition to strong showings by the leads and the wonderfully effective “Greek chorus” of R&B singers, the new cast recording serves up all the songs from the original theatrical production, including some that were left off the first cast recording. Special features include fascinating demos with composers Alan Menken and Howard Ashman. William Pearl, Barnes & Noble

January 25, 2005: The story of this musical is just too kooky for me, but I still appreciate the work done here. I too give much kudos to the Greek/girl chorus; excellent, confident singing. Butler doesn't sing enough for me to comment, although what I do hear sounds nice. Hunter Foster I was expecting alot from, since I love his sister Sutton--I hope that's not his real voice because it is too-perfect geek, but he gets the emotions down pat. Douglas Sills is a pleasantly wicked surprise especially since I only know him from Scarlet Pimpernel. But the best part of the CD comes at the end, with Menken and Ashman singing the demos. I know they were trying to achieve a certain sound with the songs they ended up using, but these first versions are just much easier to listen to and I think more clever. Plus Alan's voice just blew me away: he could totally have been a pop singer! And Howard's inflections on "Hobby": priceless. Get it just for that if you've ever been interested in the composers of Little Mermaid, Beauty & the Beast, and Newsies.

January 10, 2005: This recording is awesome. Hunter Foster (love him) is an awesome Seymore and Kerry Butler does a wonderful job as Audrey. However, the real stars are the urchins, the trio sounds wonderful together. They are the ones that make me want to get up and dance. I recomend this recording for everyone.
