Editorial Reviews

Stephen Sondheim's effervescent comic soufflé, A Little Night Music, is the most effortlessly enchanting of his distinguished career. Composed entirely of waltzes, this warm and winning 1973 recording features a flawless cast including Len Cariou, Hermione Gingold, and the divine Glynis Johns, who clutches the heartstrings with the definitive version of Sondheim's most enduring ballad, "Send in the Clowns." Legendary record producer Goddard Lieberson's crisp and unsentimental settings, Jonathan Tunick's lush Arrangements, and a string of Sondheim gems, including "A Weekend in the Country," "Liaisons," "In Praise of Women," "You Must Meet My Wife," and "Remember?" contribute to a sense of suspended timelessness, perfectly evoking the long winter nights when the time is always right for a game of hide-and-go-seek of the heart. David Elliot Cohen, Barnes & Noble

June 28, 2005: Everyday a little sting" . . . once again the names of the orchestra personnel were not included in the "in-depth" program booklet. These people are artists. What a shame.

May 26, 2000: This is the ultimate Sodhiem masterpiece. Evocative, bitter-sweet, enchanting, nostalgic, brilliant, perfect, timeless etc etc. If you don't know Sondheim, this is for you. If you do know (and love) Sondheim, you need no encouragement to get out the CD and play it yet again.
